[ATLANTA, GA, Aug. 8, 2019] — Superior Essex Communications, the leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cable in North America, was recognized with a 2019 Kansas Environmental Stewardship Award by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) for efforts towards environmental optimization at its Hoisington (KS) plant.
The award is in recognition of the plant efforts to save energy by optimizing its compressed air system through the installation of an energy efficient, variable speed air compressor as well as replacing five inefficient water trap drains with units that only open and drain when required, thus saving wasted air and energy. Overall, the combined project resulted in an annual reduction in energy of 228,588 kWh which presented as an annual savings of $20,573. Additionally, using the greenhouse gas calculator provided by the EPA, the changes resulted in 162 metric tons of CO2e being reduced.
“The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) presents Environmental Stewardship Awards annually to those communities, businesses, and industries who have made a significant improvement in protecting our environment by preventing pollution or conserving natural resources,” said KDHE Secretary Lee Norman, MD.
The continued recognition for the plant is something that Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability for Superior Essex Communications, is impressed with.
“Being an active participant in sustainability and environmental awareness is not something that our team engages in for recognition, but it is always an honor when these awards are given,” she said. “Our Hoisington Plant took this upon themselves to become more environmentally conscious and it is an example not only within our company but within the manufacturing community that reduction of energy and carbon emissions are possible.”
Its continued gains in efficiency is something that Brent Curtis, the Maintenance Manager for Hoisington, said has been rewarding.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the award. It is an honor to be recognized by the state of Kansas for our efforts in energy conservation,” he said. “Our facility continually strives to reduce energy and water consumption and this award further exemplifies our commitment.”
An awards presentation is scheduled to take place during the Kansas Environmental Conference on Thursday, August 15 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan (KS).
